Dozens of Marines and Navy personnel will get the VIP treatment at the Lake San Marcos Country Club on Saturday.

Volunteers will treat 66 service men and women who returned to Camp Pendleton and Miramar Marine Corps Air Station in the spring from Iraq and Afghanistan to golf, food and gifts. An additional 16 Marines who are recuperating from wounds will participate in a different activity.

The “Salute to Our Heroes” event shows appreciation for the sacrifices that military personnel have made, said Dennis McKee, a co-chairman who served in the Marines for 25 years.

In November 2005, McKee organized the first Salute. Volunteers said they felt good about helping out, he said, and military personnel said they were touched by the recognition. “They really do express how pleased they are that somebody is thinking about them,” McKee said.

One Marine said he had more fun at the golf event than he did at the Marine Corps' Birthday Ball, which is held each year in November, McKee said.

On Saturday, military personnel will pair up with members of the country club's men's and women's golf clubs and play for free. They will also get two meals and their spouses or significant others are invited for dinner.

This year's Salute also welcomes 16 Marines from the Wounded Warrior rehabilitation unit at the U.S. Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton. They will take a boat ride on Lake San Marcos, watch a magic show and eat lunch. For dinner, they will meet up with the other military personnel.

During dinner, packages including gift certificates for free rounds of golf, golfing equipment, beauty treatments and meals will be presented to everyone, McKee said.

The men's golf club also collected more than $10,000 for the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, which helps offset travel and lodging expenses of family members of wounded Marines.

The other co-chairman is Frank Shubert of Lake San Marcos. McKee said they and four others from the men's golf club spent months preparing for the event by seeking sponsors and donations. Both McKee and Shubert are retired and know each other through the golf club.

McKee said he and Shubert hope to make the event an annual one. Anyone who is interested in donating or being a sponsor can call Shubert at (760) 471-7177 or McKee at (760) 729-0203.
