Bessemer-based unit to deploy
Wednesday, June 06, 2007

About 140 members of a Bessemer-based Marine Reserve unit are expecting to deploy to Iraq in late September.

The members of the Anti-Terrorism Battalion, 4th Marine Division, will leave Saturday for Camp Lejeune, N.C., where they will train for about three months before heading to Iraq.

Master Sgt. David Holladay, a battalion spokesman, said the Marines will operate as a company in Iraq and do a seven-month tour in the volatile Al Anbar province. Their expected assignments include providing security for military convoys.

While its headquarters is in Bessemer, the Anti-Terrorism Battalion has sites in 10 states. The Marines it will have in the coming deployment will come from Alabama and from sites in Jackson, Miss., Tallahassee, Fla., and Chicopee, Mass.

About 35 of the mobilized Marines will be from Alabama, and about half of them served a seven-month tour in Iraq from 2004 to 2005.
