Don't expect the debate in the United Nations over Iraq to linger much longer, a retired four-star Army general said Tuesday, in a 30-minute interview broadcast live by satellite to 8,500 business offices in three countries, including one in Escondido.

"The diplomatic process is starting to melt down," said retired Gen. Barry McCaffrey, suggesting war is near. "We should be expecting that we are going to disarm Iraq in the next 30 days, one way or another."

McCaffrey predicted that, with enormous firepower and more than 250,000 soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen and women positioned outside Iraq, war will last three weeks once the command is given to attack.

But McCaffrey said allies should expect to leave as many as 100,000 troops behind, for as long as 10 years, to keep the peace and guide Iraq's transition from dictatorship to democratic society.
