Local sailors to receive combat awards


GROTON - Petty Officer 3rd Class Samuel Jordan and Petty Officer 2nd Class James Tyler will be presented with combat awards at ceremony today at the Naval Branch Health Care Clinic at the Naval Submarine Base New London.

Jordan and Tyler, hospital corpsmen at the clinic, are credited with risking their lives to attend to fallen Marines in battle during deployment in Iraq.

Jordan, a native of Ramsey, MN, is credited with providing lifesaving care to 12 Marines and three Iraqi soldiers in different incidents, including one in which he received second degree burns while treating a Marine on fire while under small arms fire from the enemy.

Tyler, from Twin Falls, ID, is created with saving the lives of two critically wounded Marines injured after an IED exploded.

Jordan will receive the Purple Heart and Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with combat “V” and Tyler the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with combat “V” at the 1 p.m. ceremony.
