Lt. col.’s death in Afghanistan probed
Robinson is highest-ranking Marine to die there

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — The death of a lieutenant colonel in Afghanistan on Friday is under investigation, according to the Defense Department.

Lt. Col. Michael A. Robinson, 42, of Sylacauga, Ala., died in Kabul, according to a Defense Department press release. He is the highest-ranking Marine, and the 38th leatherneck, to die in Afghanistan since October 2002. Four lieutenant colonels have died in Iraq since the war began there in 2003.

Robinson had been in country only two days when he died, said 2nd Lt. Craig Thomas, a Camp Lejeune, N.C., spokesman.

Robinson was assigned to Mobilization Command, Deployment Processing Command, Marine Corps Installations East, at Lejeune.

Further details were unavailable Monday.

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — The recent death of a lieutenant colonel — the highest-ranking Marine to die in Afghanistan — came from non-combat-related causes, according to a Camp Lejeune, N.C., press release.

Lt. Col. Michael A. Robinson, 42, of Talladega, Ala., died in Kabul on Friday.

His death remains under investigation. He is the 38th leatherneck to die in Afghanistan since October 2002. Four lieutenant colonels have died in Iraq since the war began there in 2003, according to Defense Department data.

Robinson had been in country only two days when he died, said 2nd Lt. Craig Thomas, a Lejeune spokesman.

Robinson was assigned as a force preservation officer, Individual Mobilization Augmentee Detachment, Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan. He was mobilized April 20.

He joined the Marine Corps in August 1987. In 2005, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve.

His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star in lieu of a second award.
