BERWICK, Pa. — A fire tore through a home that had been retrofitted for a Marine who lost part of his leg in Iraq.

The fire badly damaged the Berwick house occupied by the family of Derrick Sharpe, but authorities said no one was seriously injured.

“The whole upstairs is gone,” said Kimberly Sheets, Sharpe’s mother. “We lost everything.”

The Saturday night blaze apparently started in her stepson’s bedroom. Sheets, stepson Fabian, and sons Damian and Dalton were treated for smoke inhalation and released from hospitals early Sunday, family members said. The cause remains under investigation, fire officials said.

There were no reports of injuries to Derrick Sharpe.

Sharpe, a 2005 Berwick High School graduate, was wounded in a Sept. 23 explosion in Iraq. He returned home from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in March, but is scheduled for more surgery this month, his father said.

Construction crews had built a wheelchair ramp and made other renovations before he returned.
