Whats the basic bootcamp day like or does it change depending on the week?

LOG4
06-01-07, 01:33 PM
First, there's nothing "basic" about boot camp. It's hectic as hell and it changes daily, not weekly. There is a method to all the madness, though. The DI's are on a strict schedule and everything (well, almost everything) is done for a reason. Bottom line is do what you are told with speed and intensity, stay of the radar, and don't volunteer for sh*t.

Good luck!!

Will i get anything if i can do a few more pull-ups then everyone else or run a little faster or does that not mean ****? I mean i just dont want to call attention to myself.

LOG4
06-01-07, 01:41 PM
Dude, if you can get a perfect 300 Physical Fitness Test (PFT) score, you are the man and will get recognized at the end of boot camp. You always want to do well with PT. Calling attention to yourself in that regard is okay, but nothing negative like being the platoon slowpoke or sh*thead or anything like that.

LOG4
06-01-07, 01:43 PM
They teach you EVERYTHING you need to know. Just apply it and don't be stupid. I know it sounds harsh, but you'll get there and you'll see so many kids doing stupid things. Do what you know and do it as best as you can.

SeanWicks07
06-01-07, 01:43 PM
Okay i got a really stupid question, but what is the platoon **** head or nasty recruit or what. And what makes a good recruit from a bad one? I intend on going down there and shutting my mouth and sounding off, but really it seems like everyone says nasty recruits but never says what they do....?

LOG4
06-01-07, 01:52 PM
We had a recruit who had straight up attitude with the DI's and they always f*cked with him. They even went so far as to charge him with assault on a DI because he raised his hand toward the DI. We had another one who was just slow as sh*t and he was always f*cked with. Another one was just down right mentally slow and we all had to take the slack for it. During one of our "humps" while at Edson Range, I had to carry his rifle for him.

SeanWicks07
06-01-07, 01:54 PM
got it. is it looked down on if you help a nasty recruit or if you stay back in a hump to help out a team mate to motovate him? Hikes dont bug me. But i know it will bug some other guys can i help them out?

LOG4
06-01-07, 02:01 PM
No, it's not looked down on to help out a nasty recruit. Actually, I advise it, but it just sucks. Especially when your miles and miles into a hump and you are hating everything about boot camp then all the sudden you end up having to drag another recruit along. Yeah, it's what we as brothers do, but it just sucks.

LETTERS! LETTERS! LETTERS! One thing that REALLY SUCKS is being the one during mail call who doesn't get a letter. When you get picked up for your permanent platoon and get your address, write to a specific person who know how to contact all your friends. Have that person give your address to them so they can write you. The mail with begin to flow...

It's been over twelve years since BC, but I think I remember just wearing Cammies on Sunday.

You will always be in cammies unless you are in an inspection.

Sean,

Don't worry too much about everything.
Just remember to keep your ears and eyes open at all times and brain engaged. Always sound off and do everything at the fastest speed you can possibly gather.

look at it this way 50 push ups is only 25 Marine Corps push up's...

And the thing is you could do 1000 push ups and it will NEVER be good enough...

It's only good enough till they feel you can no longer do anymore

Someone mentioned the topic of helping your fellow recruits, who aren't quite hacking it. Your drill instructors will not encourage you to help those who need help. HOWEVER...they will pay close attention to those recruits who take the initiative, on their own, to help someone in need. And it will be remembered, when promotions for Pfc. are considered.

Always remember this...Marines willingly sacrifice their lives for other Marines.
Marines endure great risks to retrieve their wounded and dead, from the battlefield.

Although you are recruits, and not Marines yet...that tradition applies to you as well. Encourage your fellow recruits to never quit. Grab that other recruit's pack and carry it for a while, when he needs to catch his breath.

When my platoon took the Final PFT in boot camp, we had a fat-body who collapsed, out cold, about 500 yds. from the finish line. The recruit who made "Honor Man" from our platoon saw this. He had already finished his run...but he ran to this fat-body, picked him up in a fireman's carry, and ran back to the finish line!
I remember our Drill Instructors screaming at the fat kid, saying what a useless piece of sh!t he was, etc. They told him he failed the PFT.
But...our Company Commander, Capt. Symolian, said, "Not so fast there Sgt.
This recruit crossed the finish line in the allotted time. Granted it was with the help of another recruit...but THAT is what the Marine Corps is all about."

DIs aren't totally without feeling. If they tell you get down and push the world away and you do it, they probably will let you stop. Either that or they'll call every other DI in earshot over to watch you actually push the world away (bragging of course, "Look what MY recruit can do!").

When we were in the pit, sometimes I thought the DIs had a number in their head. When that number of recruits finally passed out, they stopped the IT. Maybe not, but it seemed that way.

But remember, those were the days when DIs still could smack the crap out of you (inside normally, unless they were really good like our Kill Hat was - he could smack us pretty good out on the grinder and make it look innocent at a reasonable distance). See Full Metal Jacket (except recruits were not smacked in the face, nor did/do they have rifles after graduation).

SeanWicks07

SO basically all DIs do is yell and do IT?

No, it only seems that way.

Actually they are responsible for a large portion of your instruction. For instance, drill (duh), care and cleaning of your uniforms, equipment, and your own ass, recruit knowledge (general orders, etc). They reinforce USMC history, teach ethics and values, plus many other subjects.

Plus they yell, scream, and IT your ass into the deck whenever they deem it necessary.

Not only no but HELL no! Everybody gets a turn at that - at least in bootcamp it's only for a couple of hours or so. When you get in the fleet and have to pull duty (pretty much sitting in the lounge of the barracks and "babysitting"), it will be a 24 hour thing. Depending on what unit you're with, you may get the next day off, you may have to go work a full day. You may even switch duty days with someone but you will NEVER totally NOT have to do it.

I think your buddy is fibbing, either that or he is the luckiest recruit I ever heard of. Yes, cadences are sung daily, or close enough.

Your drill instructors set the rules on firewatch. Your platoon might work how FW is assigned differently from another.

In my platoon, the guide, squad leaders, scribe, and King Rat were excused from FW. However, we also got up 30-minutes ahead of everyone else daily in order to be dressed and ready to hit our duties at reveille. FW was only one hour long and with 55 or so recruits available, you can do the math (we only stood one-man watches).

Here's a great story about duty... I was the barracks duty NCO on either a Friday or Saturday night (one of the party/clubbing nights) in MCAS Iwakuni and a good buddy of mine was my ADNCO. Well, it was very late in the morning about 0200 and I had just conducted a shift change with my ADNCO, so I took my blouse off and sat on the pool table in the lounge; he sat on the couch and we started to watch the Breakfast Club. Well, all the sudden one of the female Marines I knew and really never had any interest in stormed in and said "I'm sooo f*cked up!" We both turned around, looked at her, and turned back to watch the movie. Next thing you know, she gets in front of me, commences to mack all up on me, and whispers "let's go to your room..." I said nothing, jumped off the pool table, grabbed her hand with my left and her shoes to my right, walked down the hall to my room. Now if ALL duties were like that...Hehehehehe...

Poolees, duty isn't half bad.

Their souls are sucked out by dementors like in the Harry Potter movies. Sometimes they get them back if not promoted to First Sergeant.

In BC, you feel like the DI's are just indestructable machines. Well, throughout BC, a couple of my DI's were caught laughing. Once when we were forming for PT, one of our DI's ran out of the duty hut and into the squadbay, yelling a screaming and it turnes out that his trousers were unbloused. During the run, our Senior sang a cadence about it. Then, one day the Senior had the audacity to bring his daughter to the squadbay. That moment, we new we were dealing with a person.

Listen up, first if you move your eye balls they will be in your face. If you are at attention and you move, they will be in your face. If you move wrong they will be in your face. One DI will be out in front, but the others will be somewhere else around. If you don't move fast enough they will be in your face. This goes for the whole platoon and you will be bent or other fun things and games. Everyday is differant and there is something going to happen. Also you will all have classroom time, this is not classroom time of sort it is sweat time. You just have to go and go through it and earn the title like the rest of us did.

Oh didn't you know that any NCO in the Corps can be a DI, just have to be picked and go to the school. All Sergeants in the Corps can go nuts at anytime, just push the right button and you will see the true attitude come out. As you get rank, you get to yell more and go off about things. I have had my moments at times, because chit rolls down hill. As a Marine NCO, you get to go off at times and that is part of Marine history of rank. Just don't think DIs go off, it is all NCOS that go off in the Corp when the time is right. Just think in a combat action area with what is going on and all the yelling to get the Marines moving and Hardcore to win the Battle. So it is not DIs that have attitudes, it is all Marine NCOs that have that attitude inside us at the right time to get the job and battles done.

Everything is on a schedule. Planned out days in advance. Even the pittings as a platoon are planned out. Sure individual pits are random, but that's only if you really mess up and they get the kill hat to run you to the pit while the rest of the platoon continues on the schedule.

You actually have 2 deserts and 3 woodlands, not that it matters. You'll wear whatever you're told. And if you aren't wearing what everyone else is wearing then you probably went UnK on something (you never want to be in deserts when everyone else is in green).

Good stuff 1stRad! It should be noted that the training schedules on the cards show 1 hour for chow and in reality most of that hour is not spent eating chow ;)

Some of the training schedules appear to end at 1800 and the reality is that at 1800 the games have just begun. It is a rare class that recruits don't show up breathing hard sweating and covered in sand. 5:20 chow is always fun. Green reville is not allowed but there is nothing that says you can't recieve a right face 5 minutes after reville is sounded and by the time you reach the chow how you better be fully dressed.

No no no.....welll i want to sleep. But my buddy came back and said he never got it. O yeah big question. Are cadences sang everyday?

your buddy was probably a scribe because they are the ones who make the firewatch roster..

I was a scribe and we did stand in at first but then after talkign to the other firewatches we didnt.

Oh yea try to be buddies with them because i noticed that people who **** them off get rotated in the roster more than usual

You're going to be leaving in 4 days for hell, so I just want to let you know the following things, after reading your posts.

1. You are literally going to hell, do not think you are prepared at all.
2. You will wear cammies all the time, except for: Inspection, Family Day, Graduation.
3. The DI's will never consider you good enough. In fact, you will die more, the better you do, because you are never going to reach your best. My platoon was the honor platoon, and we got f***ed up more than anyone else probably. But, it's definitley worth it to excel.
4. PT is not hard at boot camp. I died at MOS school, 5 days a week. Just keep that in mind for motivation! ;)

5. Relax yourself completely on the rifle range. I'd shot a few rifles before boot camp, and been hunting a couple of times as well. Forget all that stupid s***. Listen to your PMI, I did, and I'm an Expert, and it was NOT hard.

6. Swim qual sucks, stretch your legs out while you're in line for 3...or you'll be like me and be a 4 qual haha.

7. Letters were very important to me, but, that does not mean that they come before your duties as a recruit, i.e. taking care of the things the DI's, guide, or squad leaders instruct you to do during square away time (when you get it). Get pictures sent too, they'll remind you of what's waiting for you back home (if you have a fine lady, all the better).

8. Do not hope for anything...only hope for chow, church, and sleep.

9. Be f***ing belligerently loud. Do not feel stupid, your stupidity will soon be turned into sweat and blood on the quarterdeck if you do not sound off.

10. Sprinting is not fast enough.

11. If you have a s***bag recruit, attempt to help him out. Fix him, and the DI's will probably be ****ed off at you for taking care of someone other than yourself, but their entire job is to be ****ed off at you, in reality they care a great deal about your readiness for the Marine Corps. However, if you don't give a f***, they will f*** you up, and they won't give two cents about you in anyway.

12. Be sneaky when necessary. You will learn mad Recruit Recon skills.

13. StandBY!

As always the most brilliant thinkers are often Lcpls. Ask questions and provide answers. An explaination at the foot of a hill is not readilly available so it is probably not the right time to bring it up. Many a lance coolie has suddenly found himself in charge.

2 to the chest is taught because you are actually shooting at someone else who is ducking and dodging and shooting back..... the chest is the largest target. If you manage 2 in the chest and he is still shooting back then at least you slowed him down enough for one to the head.
