Leathernecks and sailors with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit returned home to Camp Pendleton, Calif., on Wednesday after an extended nine-month deployment, during which they spent about five months in Iraq.

The 2,200-member MEU returned aboard three amphibious ships of the Boxer Expeditionary Strike Group and moved ashore by helicopters and landing craft, according to a MEU press release.

A detachment of AV-8B Harriers from the MEU returned to Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz., a day earlier. The remaining aviation combat elements returned Wednesday to their home stations at Camp Pendleton and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, including Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 165.

The 15th MEU left San Diego in mid-September for the Western Pacific and Persian Gulf. Marines with the MEU moved into Iraq in November in support of counterinsurgency operations, conducting combat operations in western Anbar province. They were extended twice in Iraq.

The MEU returned to the ships after completing its mission in Iraq in mid-April, according to a press release.
