Two lance corporals have died in non-hostile incidents in the Middle East in the past week, according to news releases.

Lance Cpl. Emmanuel Villarreal, 21, of Eagle Pass, Texas, assigned to the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit’s ground combat element, died in a “non-hostile vehicle accident” at a naval base in Kuwait on Sunday, the Defense Department announced Tuesday. Villarreal was with 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, in Camp Pendleton, Calif., and attached to the MEU at the time of his death.

Villarreal’s death came two days after another Marine died in a non-hostile incident in Iraq, according to a II Marine Expeditionary Force release.

Lance Cpl. David P. Lindsey, 20, of Spartanburg, S.C., was serving in Iraq’s Anbar province with Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, when he died last Friday, according to the release.

Kim Stroud, speaking on behalf of the Lindsey family, said that although the Defense Department labeled the Marine’s death as non-hostile, preliminary information suggests Lindsey was shot in the head while standing guard in Iraq, she said.

An investigation into Lindsey’s death is ongoing, the release said. As of Wednesday afternoon, it was unclear whether the investigation was an internal command inquiry or a criminal probe.
