Condoleezza Rice to visit Pendleton Wednesday

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will make a stop at Camp Pendleton on Wednesday afternoon to thank leathernecks for their military service and sacrifice, Marine Corps officials said Tuesday.
Rice will be accompanied by Alexander Downer, Australia’s foreign affairs minister, as she meets with Marines, officials said. She will address news reporters or take questions, they said.
Downer, at Rice’s invitation, is making a short visit to California, where he will visit the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, near Los Angeles, as well as the San Francisco Bay area, according to his official Web site. He is expected to meet with Adm. Timothy Keating, who heads U.S. Pacific Command, at Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii, on his return trip to Australia.
“This visit underscores the closeness and depth of the relationship between our two countries and will provide an opportunity to discuss matters of mutual concern across our shared foreign policy agenda,” Downer said in a statement issued by his office.
