On Friday evening — fittingly, the start of the Memorial Day weekend — the National Medal of Honor Museum will reopen to the public aboard the World War II aircraft carrier Yorktown in Charleston, S.C.

The museum closed last year for a complete renovation and expansion. To celebrate the grand reopening, a private fundraising gala that will include about 50 Medal of Honor recipients will be held Wednesday evening at the museum, located inside the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum aboard the Yorktown.

NBC news anchor Brian Williams is serving as the evening’s host and will broadcast live from the ship prior to the fundraiser on the NBC Nightly News, according to museum officials.

The Medal of Honor Museum features four exhibits designed to educate visitors, through sounds, imagery and other materials, on the medal’s Civil War origin and the “toll of war and bravery” the medal evokes, according to a press release. To date, 3,462 troops have been awarded the Medal of Honor, the museum says.

Tickets for the May 25 grand opening are $15 and are available through www.etix.com.
