Eight red, white and blue scarves are on their way from South Walton knitting needles to U.S. Marines serving in Iraq.

The project began when a group of eight women, most of whom are members of the Seagrove Garden Club, began getting together at one another’s home to knit. Most in the group are first-time knitters. When thinking of a project, Sheree Csire thought of her good friend’s 22-year-old daughter who is serving in Iraq and wondered if she would like to have a knitted scarf. Sgt. Sarah Gilliam loved the idea and so did seven others in her platoon. Csire asked her knitting group if they would be interested in participating and indeed they were.

Geri Rinkavage, Mary Slater, Kathy Hasbrouck, Carolyn Mullins, Sharon Jenkins, Lynn Abbit, Sheree Csire and Nancy McCullen each created an original and unique red, white and blue patriotic scarf, which they mailed to the Communications Company Wire Platoon last week along with a care package of magazines, gum and toiletries.

“I thought it would be wonderful for the gals serving to let them know we're thinking and praying for them and all the service personnel,” said Csire. “Sarah works 18-hour days and has been very homesick.”

The knitting group has now begun its next project – shawls and purses – also to be sent to Sgt. Sarah and her friends.
