(NEWS CENTER) - Four Marines from Maine were awarded the Silver Star Sunday. It's the military's third highest award for gallantry in battle.
The Marines who received the stars today are Sergeant Joel Gagnon of Biddeford, Corporal Eric King of Bangor, Corporal Lucas Reardon of Cumberland, and Corporal Brian Smith of Hancock.

Corporal Smith was on combat patrol in Fallujah last August when he was hit by a roadside bomb. He said he is honored to receive the Silver Star, but says those he served with are just as worthy.

"Everybody there faces the same danger and obviously the guys who get hurt get recognized, but I think its important the whole unit and everybody faces the potential of danger and just because they didn't get hurt. I think recognition of the whole company would be more in order," said Corporal Smith.

The first Silver Star medal was handed out in 1917.
