JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — As many as 3,500 troops and civilians from across the country will participate in the second-annual Run for the Warriors at Camp Lejeune, N.C., on Saturday.

The kickoff will include a welcome home ceremony, which many wounded service members have not received because they returned home individually to recover at military treatment facilities.

Three races will be held following the ceremony, including a 10K run, 5K run/walk and a one-mile run/walk.

Saturday’s run at Camp Lejeune coincides with another Run for the Warriors scheduled in Iraq. About 1,100 runners have signed up to participate in that race.

Another event, Kids Run for the Warriors, will be held the same day in Chesapeake, Va., involving about 150 children.

Proceeds from the races will benefit wounded service members and their families through Hope for the Warrior programs. These include Spouses Scholarships, A Warrior’s Wish, Hope-N-Comfort Bears and the Warrior House.

The 2007 Run for the Warriors is part of the Marine Corps Grand Prix Series at Camp Lejeune. All race finishers are eligible for Grand Prix points.
