MID MICHIGAN (WJRT) - (05/17/07)--A Mid-Michigan Marine has received the highest honor for his unselfish acts. LCpl. Ricardo Gutierrez of the 124th Marines received the Purple Heart after he sustained wounds helping to save the life of his sergeant.

On March 27, Gutierrez and his unit were performing a police mission when his superior, Sgt. Marcus Golynski, was shot and killed by a sniper.

Because of his act of bravery, the military awarded the 24 year old Arthur Hill graduate with the Purple Heart.

"I didn't want to get it," Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez's fellow Marine Kyle Chase was there by his side.

Gutierrez spent a month in a military hospital and will start rehab. He arrived home to his family last month. His parents were looking on with great admiration.

"I'm just so proud of him," his father said. "He's become a man. We're just so proud of him."

"We didn't know what would happen to him," his mother said. "Thank God he's alive."

Gutierrez's brother is serving with the Army in Iraq.
