SAN DIEGO -- The life of a local Marine honored as a war hero was celebrated Thursday night in a documentary produced by the History Channel.

The film, "Act Of Honor", details the life of Sgt. Rafael Peralta.

It was shown to his family for the first time Thursday night at a special screening at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park. Several Marines were also in attendance.

The 25-year-old was killed in Fallujah in 2004, when his fellow Marines said he covered a grenade with his own body to save the lives of fellow Marines.

One Marine in the documentary described what happened.

"He was looking right at it, and he grabbed it and reached over his right hand and pulled it to left side of his heart."

Peralta was a graduate of Morse High School who immigrated from Mexico when he was 16. He was described as someone who would do anything for his family and Marines.

His family was devastated by the loss, and the film followed them as they dealt with his death.

The documentary will air on the History Channel at 7 p.m. Saturday.
