Troops to be welcomed home
Celebration set for tonight
By Terry Camp

SAGINAW COUNTY (WJRT) - (05/15/07)--A Saginaw County community will honor everyone who has made some type of sacrifice for the war in Iraq.

Whether having a loved one overseas or just saying a prayer, St. Charles is putting on a big celebration Wednesday night.

Recently, five Marines from St. Charles returned from Iraq safe and sound. And the mothers of those Marines are thankful for that.

"We are so blessed that we sent five over there and five came home safe and sound," said Linda Parson, who has a son overseas.

Those five St. Charles Marines came back last month but not everyone was able to celebrate in the homecoming.

"When they came home, they came to Buena Vista, and it was pretty much closed for the family, so we wanted to incorporate it in the community because they have been so supportive," Parson said.

So Bulldog Stadium will be the site of a celebration to honor more than those who just returned from Iraq, but to honor those who have sent the e-mails, cards, letters and said prayers while the Marines were overseas.

In all, 16 St. Charles graduates have served in the military since 2000, and while not all will be in town, they will all be represented.

The focal point of many small towns is its school, and for one night, a school district that has shaped the lives of so many military personnel will host a celebration in the middle of these difficult times.

The rally will be held at the football field at St. Charles High School. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. The rally begins at 6:30 p.m. and everyone is welcome.
