FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION

The air is electric, the reporters scurry around, notebook and pen in hand.
The camera & soundmen stay close behind; moving with their lieutenant, taking their stand.
They call the station for support. Here they come! Tell the Land!

The young protestor’s sign has a clear message. No War! Especially afar.
When the interviewer asks, he eagerly shares his philosophy, “I don’t believe in War!”
His eyes gleam, his chest sticks out. He is Moral. He is Enlightened. He is a Star.

The young lady next to him anxiously bends in to add her Truth to the day.
We just need to give Peace a Chance! No Blood for Oil! She righteously must say.
A crowd around her roars approval! Fists in the air. Stop this! We must not delay!

We will surely fight if danger is imminent.
But you don’t understand what that guy really meant.
Just be patient, he’ll relent!!

They know nothing of the dangers or the enemies of the past.
They know nothing of history or those who have stood in harm’s way before the mast.
That day of the towers was sad, but it too is now in the past.

If we just talk and hope, things will be OK.
If we leave it to others, it will go away.
Besides, I really have to wash my hair and car today!

It is so passé to speak of the price of liberty.
I really need my $4.50 for that Starbuck’ coffee.
But my folks and I believe the right to drink it in peace comes for free.

They stream by, enjoying their walk on the beautiful day.
The streets are clean and peaceful; the police protect their way.
Won’t Mom and Dad be proud, they think, I’m following the family tradition!

In another land the air is electric. The troops move methodically, weapons in hand.
The radioman and corpsman follow close with their lieutenant, hugging the sand.
They call the battalion for support. Here they come! We’ll make our stand!

The young NCO’s orders have a clear message. Win this War! Especially afar.
When the recruiter asked, he had eagerly shared his philosophy, “I don’t want a War!”
His eyes gleamed, but someone, he said, has to protect my mom & sister. They hang a Blue Star.

The young troop next to him anxiously bends in to look at the map overlay.
We just need to do our job to give Peace a Chance! No Blood today he earnestly prays.
The squad around him nods in approval. Locked & loaded. Stop them, we will not delay!

We will have trained well, knowing danger is imminent.
Thank God our leaders understood what that guy really meant.
The bastard has proved once again; never by patience will tyrants relent!!

He has been taught of the dangers of our enemies of the past.
He knows the price paid by those in harms way as they stood before the mast.
That day of the towers drove him to join this band of green that became family so fast.

If we just do our job, he tells himself, things will be OK.
The others have left it to us; we will drive these enemies away.
The sergeant leads the way; they follow him into the fray!

Her DI helped her understand the price paid for liberty.
Now she sleeps and wakes up in range of enemy artillery.
Their folks served and taught them to believe in responsibility.

They move stealthily forward, doing their job on the beautiful day.
They will keep the streets at home safe; let the others live in a peaceful way.
Won’t Mom and Dad be proud, they think, I’m following the family tradition!
