Marine colonel says captain not derelict in Haditha killings

Associated Press - May 15, 2007 3:13 AM ET

A hearing resumes today at Camp Pendleton, California, for a Marine captain accused of failing to investigate the deaths of 24 civilians in the Iraqi town of Haditha.

Marine Colonel John Ewers testified yesterday that Captain Randy Stone's actions never "rose to the level of criminal dereliction." Ewers said he believed Stone "bore some of the responsibility" for what prosecutors called "thin reporting" in the November 2005 slayings, but said others in the battalion were also to blame. The dead included women and children.

The slayings occurred after a roadside bomb killed one Marine driving a Humvee and injured two others.

The hearing will determine whether Stone will be court-martialed. Stone and three other officers are charged with dereliction of duty. Three enlisted Marines are charged with murder.
