The unit that keeps tabs on the Corps’ e-mail traffic is moving to a new building to be named “Code Talker Hall” during a May 17 dedication ceremony at Quantico, Va., according to a Corps press release.

Several World War II-era code talkers — Navajo Indians who used their unique language as the basis for a code never broken by the Japanese during the war — have been invited to the dedication of Marine Corps Network Operations and Security Command’s new building, according to the release.

Col. Eric Rolaf, MCNOSC commander, said naming his unit’s new facility after the code talkers “gives life to the symbolic linkage between the critical communications of the past with the critical communications necessary to succeed into the future.”

Rolaf pointed to similarities between what the MCNOSC does to protect digital information and what code talkers did to protect voice communications.

“I think every Marine will see the direct connection as they reflect upon our rich heritage and will understand that the name is truly a recognition of the continuity that exists between our past and the future,” he said.
