La Cueva Grad Killed In Iraq

A highly decorated Marine from Albuquerque who was La Cueva High School's first state wrestling champion and later a fearless leader on the battlefield has been killed while serving in
Iraq. The U.S. Defense Department hasn't released details of Major Doug Zembiec's death, but family friends said the Marine's parents Donald and Jo Ann Zembiec were notified Thursday night. Zembiec was known for being upbeat and confident despite the sometimes grim circumstances of war. In 2004, he led the 2nd Battalion's Echo Company through a month-long fight for the city of Fallujah. He was wounded along with dozens of other Marines, and some lost their lives. He later told the San Diego Union-Tribune that those Marines died for a cause, for something bigger than themselves. In addition to his parents and a brother, Zembiec is survived by his wife and a young daughter.
