Retired Army Major Gen. John Batiste has been asked to leave his position (http://thinkprogress.org/2007/05/10/cbs-fires-gen-batiste-over-votevets-ad) as a consultant to CBS News over a new advertisement criticizing the Iraq war. The ad was produced by the group VoteVets.

Appearing on MSNBC's Countdown, Batiste, former First Infantry Division commander, tells host Keith Olbermann in the video clip below, "I'm no longer wearing the uniform of our country; I have no ties to the defense industry; I can speak honestly, I have a duty to do so. And I know there [are] other generals both active duty and retired that are doing all they can within their means. In my case, I'll continue to speak out."

After Olbermann asks Batiste about the war itself, the retired general says, "We went to war with a fatally flawed strategy ... This is all about a president who's relying almost solely on the military component of strategy to accomplish the mission in Iraq."

"Sadly," he continues, "we're missing the diplomatic, the political, and the economic components that are fundamental and required to be successful."

Anyone who supposes for even a moment that Gen Petraeus doesn't have an appreciation for the diplomatic, economic and political aspects of COIN should be fired for not paying attention.

Wow!! CBS firing somebody for being against the war! I guess they are trying to show they are not as liberal as NBC. Will wonders never cease.

Today cease-fires and armistices are imposed on lesser powers by multilateral agreement -- not to avoid great-power competition but for essentially disinterested and indeed frivolous motives, such as television audiences' revulsion at harrowing scenes of war. But this, perversely, can systematically prevent the transformation of war into peace.


Davblay is probably right... But every once in a while, the lens in which what is viewed respectful, and what is not, needs to be cleaned off every once in a while..

I mean.. Calling it like it is should be seen as far more respectful than letting BS just slide... I could be wrong on this one though.

Yes, the media is still liberal. CBS, NBC, ABC. Anyone who gets their news SOLEY from those outfits will see a biased view of not only the war, but America as a whole.
