So it's not just we Marines who get hooked on the Corps! It seems like others who are not Marines themselves, but become associated w/the Corps in some way, feel the espirit de corps, also. <br />

Dickey Chapelle was in our unit in Vietnam in 1962.

We had her around for a while. She was doing everything we were doing except that she carried cameras and film and we carried our weapons.

I got to know her a little in our down time. She was of course way ahead of this country boy of 19 years old at the time. I could tell some stories. lol

My memory of the times around her have some humor and some awe of what she was about.

She was "All Marine"!

Will never forget her. May God rest her soul.

Semper Fi Dickey, you were one of us.

You'll Always be Remembered

By GySgt Tom Bartlett

You looked like Hell, just standing there,
A grin across your face....
I asked you then what brought you,
To that god-forsaken palce?

Your Marine Corps jacket trailed down,
Almost to your knees;
Those baggy trousers fit you,
Like a sail without a breeze.

You came in from the field,
And clenched a glass of beer,
A PFC (just a kid) asked:

Whats a woman doing here?

The "Top" stood up and faced about,
His face a vivid red;
"You'll lock your jaws , Marine, or
You'll wish that you were dead!"

He told us how you landed,
With marines of World War II
On an island we call "Oki."...
Marines took care of you.

But you cared for them in stories

But you cared for them in stories
And photographs galore.....
And people back here, Stateside,
Read your stories of the war.

I saw you for the last time,
Before I left that place,
Marines carried you.... Gently...
Tears ran down a face.

You'll always be remembered,
As Marines march into Hell;
You'll always be remembered,
As a Marine .... Dickey Chapelle.
