Hello everyone,

I am currently running to be fit for the IST. I run a mile and a half in 11 minutes and about 24 to 54 seconds depending on the weather. During my first few weeks of running, I was completely fine. During some of my runs, I did have lower leg pain but I ran through it. However, yesterday, my ankles started to hurt and I just got shin splints. At rest, there is no pain so I think the shin splint is at its beginning state. I plan to take four days off to recover before running again.

My big worry is that if I injure myself, will I still be able to ship out? I ship out August 13, 2007. Also, if I get shin splints at boot camp, will the Drill Instructors send me home or delay my graduation? I can and will run through the pain although it may exacerbate my injury. Right now, I am trying to work with myself and prevent this altogether so I don't become some idiot loser that whines about his pain all the time. Seriously, failing basic training will be the end of me.

Grrrrr. Lousy setbacks.

Thank you.

Go see your doctor. Get x-rayed and discuss a possible consult with an orthopedic or sports medicine specialist if your doc isn't certain. You can't self-diagnose like that. It may not be shin splints, but something else (strain, sprain, broken bone).

Is the pain actually in your ankles or a bit higher - in your shins? Back of the leg, sides, or front?

However, I fully agree with your idea to stop running for now. Make it until at least you've seen your doctor. No running, extensive walking, or other aggressive leg workouts, especially if it causes pain.

Ice your lower legs where it hurts. Apply the ice for about 15-minutes, then take it off for 15. Do this cycle a couple of times. Two or three icings per day until you see your doc.

Don't panic. It may be nothing more than some muscle soreness that a little ice, later heat therapy, and rest, will fix in a week. Go see your doc.

Thank you Zulu 36.

My pain is actually located above the ankle about 1-2 inches. It is a dull ache and it is quite difficult to describe. When I walk, the pain may or may not appear. If I pronate my feet a little, it may come out for about a minute and go away. During stretching, there is no pain. During running, there is a slight sensation but not pain. It used to be worse actually but it still lingers.
Unfortunately, there are no sports medicine doctors in my city. My doctors can see it and probably can tell me so I'll take your advice and make an appointment. My right leg went through this too but got better. However, I have to be careful with it.

Ugh, still worrying if I will get sent home from San Diego. Better not worry now, August is a long way off.
