Navy chief: sailors will continue Iraq, Afghanistan
PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii The Navy's top officer says he will continue sending sailors to perform shore jobs in Iraq and Afghanistan to help the Army and Marine Corps.
Thirteen thousand sailors are currently serving as security guards, computer technicians and other posts in the Middle East and Central Asia.Five thousand of those sailors are in Iraq.Admiral Mike Mullen told Pearl Harbor-based sailors today that the Navy can do its part for the ground effort, noting some soldiers and Marines have already been to Iraq and Afghanistan four times.The sailors volunteer to fill job openings and deploy for about one year. They receive basic combat training at an Army school before they go.
