FYI to admin: The term "woman Marine" is no longer used in the Corps, as its acronym, WM, has been repeatedly used to call female Marines "Walking Mattresses." This is an out-dated term and is no longer acceptable.
Terms used are "Female Marine" and, get this, "Marine."
For all you Old Corps Marines, female recruit training has been updated to be the same as male training. We fire on the same rifle ranges for the same score, we're in the pool with male recruits, we repel off the same tower with our brother platoon, we see our brother platoon during The Crucible, etc.. I know that female training used to be different, but I just wanted to update any of you salty Marines on the change.

Uh, yeah, that's my point. There's no need to have a "woman Marine" section, but since they have it, they might as well call it something that doesn't have sexist strings attached to it. I checked your profile and saw that you're male, so you probably don't realize the amount of bull**** you have to take as a female Marine. They tell you your EGA means you don't have to prove yourself ever again, but that's a lie. You see 20 broke male Marines and no one blinks an eye, but 1 broke female Marine gets some kind of "Yep, typical female" comment.
As a woman that's worked very hard for what I have, and can out-lift and out-PT many men, this kind of treatment is annoying. Everyone thinks you're cute and sweet and adorable because awww, you're a female and a Marine, how nice! Then they get ****ed when you don't put out or you tell them to back the **** off.
I'm no feminazi, but you imagine working harder than most people every day of your life, and then hearing stupid comment after stupid comment after stupid comment just because of your gender. It's ****ing annoying.

lol...Im sorry ..I really am ..I didnt mean to **** you off. I guess I never really worked with female Marines so I guess I never saw it. But from my point of view anyway I dont really care what you are as long as you are a Marine. About the section , dont worry about that, I dont think anyones trying to be sexist , its just a place where the women who belong to this forum can shoot the s*it if they so choose.
My baby sister was a BAM (Beautiful American Marine).

Outlaw, like I said, I'm no feminazi, so I wasn't ****ed at you, just trying to explain what it's like to be a female Marine. It's one thing after another. You know the mentality most Marines have: dun dah dun! They're complete idiots, and with that you're going to get your sexists in there. Lucky for me, I always wanted to be buff and I'm a workaholic and I can command people, so I never have a problem shutting them up. The good thing is I wear my ovaries on the outside, so anyone who knows me knows that you don't mess with me; I always have someone in earshot to vouche for me if someone says something stupid.
"Women can't (blah)."
"Uh, dude, she can out-(blah) YOU."
I know no one meant it to be condescending, sexist, or rude to title this the Woman Marine forum. I was just trying to bring it to an admin's attention because the rules regarding this term have changed due to its sexist correlation. It's also an FYI for any Marine that DOES encounter a female Marine who IS a feminazi...this way, you can avoid getting your cohones chewed.

A lance Corporal calling other Marines idiots .... nice. Hey Kim can I call her sir? ;)
If they need to be straightened out, they need to be straightened out. I don't care what rank they are (but make sure to use slightly more tact for officers and SNCO's as needed). That's how I get officers encouraging me to become an officer (the only difference between me and an officer is that they went to OCS, I have a degree), that's how I have people who outrank me willing to do things for me while other people suck up or try to get pity (one female I know got rank because she cried).
Remember, the Corps is gay for confidence. It's our unwritten rule.
And wouldn't you want to ask me if you could call me "sir"? That's another thing: we're both Marines, so why am I a "sir" if I'm walking around like I own the place? You see what I’m talking about here, Outlaw? It's just annoying. People think they're being cute, and it's just retarded.

My baby sister was a BAM (Beautiful American Marine).
I have 2 younger sisters that are BAMs (Beautiful American Marines). My question to the young LCPL is this: Is the PFT the same for men and women as to scoring and events? Or is there a different standard for the female versus what the male of the same age group has to do?
strawberryp0cky
05-07-07, 01:19 PM
The PT is still on a score of 300 for females, but two things are different: our run time and our hang. While many guys will knock the arm hang (hanging in the "up" pull-up position for as long as possible, 70 seconds = 100 points), the truth of the matter is that the Corps really did find something that is suited for the gender: men honestly have a harder time with the hang. Big guys like my brother have no trouble hanging, but the average Marine isn't 6'4, 260 pounds, that can bench over 350. I lift weights and am into fitness, so I can do pull-ups myself even though being a female it's harder. The pull-ups are harder for women, and the hang is harder for men…both genders can do either, but the Corps realized that they should go for the one that's more suited to it. What I'm saying is that while they are different, they are essentially equivalent.
The run time is different, where I think it's 20 or 21 minutes for a 300 on a female PFT.
The problem is, we females don't actually think this is entirely fair. Because it's "harder" and not "impossible," we think the standards should be the same.
semperfi170
05-07-07, 01:27 PM
Well, you are definitely motivated! Thanks for the input about the differences for the PFT. Interesting that it has moved closer to the same test for men and women. Don't worry about the dips**ts that don't understand your motivation. If they think you are cute and something special that is great. Just be the best Marine you can and let the others display their lack of intelligence. Don't sink to their level.

lol..ok i understand. But a while back we had another Marine who had a chip on her shoulder. Some of the Marines might remember her Lorix. She seemed like she was a good Marine but was alway telling us her accomplishments, and her accolades and always showing us her resume. You know what? Nobody gave a f*ck. Just keep doing what your doing , do it well and carry on. Dont worry about what other people think and if your not sleeping with every Marine to get promoted and your not putting out , and gettin you knees dirty fine. But dont expect anyone to pat you on the back or give you props for not being a *****. Your just doing what your supposed to be doing.

There was one that needed a good punch-fest. He kept telling me how women are lesser than men in all respects, and when I tried to reply, he put his hand on my face to shut me up. It's on like Donkey Kong when that bull**** happens, and I showed him just how "lesser" this woman was when it came to fighting when I stomped his ass.
One of the reasons they've switched gears with female training is because they realize that in our line of work, and with MOS's being opened to us (I'm in an MOS that was opened to females only 12 years ago), we are going to be in the line of fire so they might as well train us for it. I don't know about when you went through MCT, but we also attend MCT and except for our sleeping arrangements, we're in the same platoon at all times with our male counterparts: training, chow, etc.. We learn about all the weapons, squad tactics, and the like because they realized that yes, women do get caught in the ****.
The thing is, some of us want that…why do you think I went for 1371? :)
Thanks for your encouragement, though.
Outlaw: I'm in 100% agreement with you. My OIC is like that, always trying to show off what she does, but she doesn't know how to use a scanner and doesn't realize I went to college longer than she did. Why? I don't talk about it. Even though my field of study pertains to my MOS, no one ****ing cares so why the hell brag about it? The way I see it, if you have to show off past accomplishments to gain respect, you suck at your job and don't know a damn thing about respect.
As for expecting people to give me props, oh HELL no. I'm just like any other person who takes care of their body and has a strong work ethic, I'm not special just because I'm a girl. If I thought I deserved special treatment, I'd be crying and showing off my tits.

WTF??? The difference between an officer and an enlisted person with a degree is that the officer went the extra mile to become an officer, gets paid to be an officer and leader of Marines, and shoulders the responsibility for the welfare of his or her Marines. Unless you also take the initiative to become an officer, you are cast in the role of "follower." Good followers become good leaders, but even the best leader in any give situation is never the lead dog. And unless you're the lead dog, the scenery never changes.
Although your point is well taken regarding the use of certain terms which, through the magic of "political correctness," have become taboo, it is my personal belief that you have put yourself in the position where you now either have to put up or shut up. I don't care about your degree. I don't care how hard you have it. I don't care that you feel you have to work harder than the men. I don't care how much you deadlift or how many pullups you can do. None of that really matters unless it is the opening chapters of a true success story. You are expending vast amounts of energy showing the boys your superiority, when all you should be concentrating on is how to be the best Marine you can be. Whether that means that you excel through the enlisted ranks, or go to OCS and become the finest officer the Corps has ever seen, you need to put the action behind the words. Don't come here with your ovaries hanging out and expect to change the world one old Marine at a time. It won't happen. In fact, anyone not as nice as me would have your ovaries for lunch in here. But what would any of that prove? Not a thing. Act behind those words, and be the very best Marine you can be. That's all anybody wants of you. Semper Fi.

And yet another person misses the point because he wants to go off on his own, personal rant. I do that stuff for myself. But apparently, equal treatment like, I dunno, not having someone put their hand on my face because they think women are inferior is too much to ask. The retards that get mad that I don't put out are retards, so I don't associate with them. When people get stupid and start putting their hands on me, that's another thing entirely.
But I guess I should just "put up" with it and be quiet, because we're Marines and we excel about being hushed and polite, right? Like I said, I don't associate with the retards, so it's not like your post "got to me" or anything. I'm beyond confident in my abilities, and as I already said, that's why I don't talk about the fact that I have a degree. That's okay, Marines aren't known for their reading comprehension, I'll let the fact that you missed that slide.

Strawberry,
It must suck to be you, being so miserable about so many things.
If you joined the Marine Corps to "help people" you joined the wrong outfit. Last time I checked, the Marine Corps' #1 job was to kill people and break their things. Helping people comes along a little further down the list. You wanted the Peace Corps not the War Corps.
I do not like being called an idiot by young, inexperienced people regardless of gender, ethnicity, wealth, or place of origin. I have been many places, lived in many places (at some of which the cockroaches wouldn't stay), done many things, dealt with many different cultures. I've been shot at, mortared, rocketed, punched, kicked, spit on, and more. I've also shot at people, punched them, kicked them, broke some arms, eardrums, and damaged other anatomical features. Some of that was before I went in the Marine Corps.
I have several college degrees.
Lets not mention the absolute hovels I've seen people living in around the world and comparing it to what I had in the Marine Corps when in garrison. I won't mention the sh*tty food fed to some Egyptian soldiers my unit was near and how much of our prison food we shared with them. They seemed to like it a lot.
Furthermore, I HAVE eaten real prison food and Marine Corps food is NOT prison food. I have also consumed really nasty water and survived. I haven't read yet where we can track down info on the Marine who died of rotten water, implied to be in garrison.
And since the Marine Corps' #1 job is to kill people and break their things, Marines are expected to be violent at times. Add alcohol and look out. Omega Alpha Beta whatever in the food means nothing.
Lack of empathy for my fellow human beings. I guess being a police officer and paramedic counts for nothing, not to mention the helping things I did do as a Marine. I still see a shrink regularly because of all of the empathy I left behind with Vietnamese orphans, dead and wounded Marines, their families, dead babies, hurt kids, and assorted other crime victims.
And lets not forget the little kid hit by a car, who left some of his brain matter on my police jacket as he died in my arms. That stuff does not all wash out of dark blue nylon material, and I got to use a lot of empathy until I could afford a new jacket.
I have little empathy left for people who call me, and other people I respect, an idiot because we think some of their complaints about life are pathetic and unimportant in greater scheme of things.

Oh, so there you go, that comment you're replying to actually doesn't apply to you, does it? So...why get mad and go on a super rant? Some people are looking to be offended, yet you claim that I'm miserable.
Interestingly, I just PM'd another member about that...I'm actually quite happy with my life, especially considering all the crap that happens is funny to me because I like the comic stylings of guys like Lewis Black. I mean, if I was the type to be upset, man, I'd have a crappy outlook...I don't know how I'd get out of bed in the morning!
Was one of your "several degrees" in "analyzing people over the internet?" If so, you may want a refresher course or two.
Oh, to answer your question, I became a combat engineer specifically to detect mines. Combat engineers are also sent out on humanitarian missions, like repairing the damage caused by the Tsunami. Naturally, you're more experienced and have done wonderous things like eating prison food and drinking bad water, so I'm not telling you anything you don't know!
As for your kind closing statement, perhaps that's the difference between you and I: empathy has not worn thin. Maybe if I get a little more salt in my veins and a strong taste for blood even when not in the Corps, maybe then I'll be as wonderful and "real" as you! The best part about the last statement is that you don't realize that it can apply to you. Perhaps some people are tired of your complaints about life (see your rant)?
That's okay, you've earned it, oorah! You've earned the right to not realize your hypocrisy and wasted words. That takes years of breaking bones and eardrums and staying in dirty hovels. Kudos to you!

In fact, yes, one of my degrees does help me analyze people on the Internet. Funny you should notice that.
For someone who claims to be pretty happy in life, there are a lot of things making you unhappy. But, to each their own.
One thing you may, or may not, have noticed on this site, anything posted on an open thread is directed at everyone. Anyone can be offended. Anyone can reply. If you want it private, keep it on PM.
strawberryp0cky
05-07-07, 05:41 PM
I am happy because I am an optimistic person.
That doesn't mean I automatically shut out the rest of the world and what's going on. That's "ignorance," not "happiness."
I am curious about your degree, is it a certification or a degree, and how long did it take? It couldn't have taken that long, not to make snap judgements that 16 year-old goth kids make to sound intellectual. Maybe the degree helps you sound like a 16 year-old pseudo-intellectual goth kid, which may draw out further information in some fashion, and thus give you more ammunition. Ah, covert!
Another thing I "sound" is condescending. I've heard my voice and even when I'm trying to be funny, nice, or what have you, I still sound like a dick. Like some kind of holier-than-thou Lumbergesque douche bag. But it's not in my words, and it's not in my meaning, and it's not in my heart. So "sounds like" and "seems like" can be misleading. That's why I joked about your degree...I can't actually get mad about it, because I know how I sound. I certainly know.

Then be PROUD that you are a woman! AND, as an added bonus, you're a Marine! Those 2 words alone make you more special than your male counterparts because, even though you're a "girl", you've done something that a lot of men CAN'T! Men LOVE us when we can get our hands greasy and then clean up as pretty as we do - THEY can't do that. Some of them will even tell you that they love a woman that knows how to shoot an M16 too.

The only reason I made this thread was to notify whomever that WM is seen as a derogatory term now, and in case it puts some people off, it'd be a good idea to change it. That's all.
As for using M&M's as mattresses, that's how I defended my roommate:
Guy: "She's such a slut!"
Me: "Well, you think about it. If YOU were living in a barracks composed chiefly of WOMEN and you had your pick, you'd be doing the same thing."
Guy: "WHERE IS THIS WOMAN MILITARY AND HOW DO I GET IN?"
I guess it's dumb to ask that something get changed in the event that someone gets offended...but I dunno, some people have self-esteem issues, I just thought a possible conflict could be avoided...?

Woman Marine = WM = Walking Mattress.
That's the evolution of it.

Semper Fi.
Perfectly stated.

Well, LCpl...call me what you will, tell me about your degrees, do more pull ups than me, run faster than me...and when you are done...don't forget to add Sgt to anything else you have to say to me...
You want the respect of an officer? then go to OCS...otherwise...learn where you belong, NOT as a Female Marine, but as a LCpl...

One week after I graduated high school I went to bootcamp and was in one of the first series to complete the warrior training. That means, BOOT, that we got to fire the big rifles and play with grenades like the little boys did while on Parris Island.... I qualified with a rifle it was with a 242 out of 250 and the greatest tragedy of my time served is that I couldn't apply to the sniper platoon because I was a woman. That was 1988 and it was old news then.
You were probably still p*ssing in your pants at the time we went to the Persian Gulf.
I don't give a flying rat's fuzzy ass what YOU think, but I am and always will be a Woman Marine. Not even Lewis B Puller could hop out of the grave and take it from me.
How DARE you impeach the service of women, regardless of the time or type of their service? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? IT IS ON OUR BACKS YOU STAND AS YOU REACH FOR YOUR GOALS, SISTER.
If you were my TROOP and I discovered the depth and breadth of the disrespect you had shown your elders here today you would be digging tank traps until the last Marine came home from Iraq.

Maybe you can ponder that while you do your almight pull ups. Really. WHo gives a crap? PULL UPS? Are you KIDDING me?
You are worried about pull ups and you can't even debate a simple subject without infuriating bystanders over semantics.
Some men don't like it that women are in the Marines. Put your big girl panties on and Deal with it. Does it matter? No. Do you think it will be different in the civilian work force? YOU ARE MISTAKEN.

Wow, where's the love, lol. I think Strawberry was just trying to say she is as much a Marine as us guys, and all female Marines are, IMO. She may have went about it a bit harshly but sometimes typing emotions on a keyboard can lead to different people reading different things.
We are all, (males and females), members of an exclusive club for life, the Marine Corps. We all earned the title. Some did it differently than others. I know an older fella, in his mid 70's, that went to USMC bootcamp in NC. He's a black guy and I'm thinking the Corps was still segregated then? I never asked him why, but he is still a Marine and earned the title. There has been different time frames for bootcamp, etc, its always changing. Female Marines back when I went in, 1978, were trained totally different than how they are now. The women back then still earned the title and are Marines. We may rant and rave with each other, or fight with each other, but like a family we get over it and move on, while still being a family of Marines.
Mojojay made some good points, its human nature for us guys to look at women...well, as women. We can't help it, most men are dogs, lol. We went to Parris Island last week and were watching different platoons of female Marines train...I was thinking how cute so many of them are, (sick ain't it), and a lot were cute. Their Drill Instructors were yelling, hollering and messing with them pretty much like the male DI's do to their recruits. The point is I was checking for hotties among the female Marines...point made, I'm a dog.
Also mojojay, I think the PFT is, Flex arm x 15 secs, 50 crunches x 2 min. and yes a 3 mile run x 31 minutes. A perfect score would be 70 flex, 100 crunches and a 21 minute 3 mile run....sound pretty hard to me.

Yes, I'm Old Corps, but not that old. We are and will always be Marines, we all keep our self in shape. At least I do, no I didn't fire M16's, we weren't allowed to. I worked in an section that consisted of 48 Male Marines. I was in Data Processing in the CG building at MCRD San Diego. We were very feminine, and I hated the term BAM, so you can all put that where the sun doesn't shine. Semper Fi. LadyM59 Sheila Hays

You really need to be put in your place, you may be a Gunny but so isn't my nephew. He just retired, I have always looked up to him. I was so proud when I went to his retirement at Camp Pendleton. I have a nephew who is an E8 in the Air Force. My grandson is training for Iraq, he is a Tanker in the Army. He is stationed at Fort Hood. I am a MARINE, not a BAM. I can take the heat. Semper Fi. Its great to have someone to look up to. Glad to hear that you can take the heat. When I was in the Corps the nickname for a Woman Marine was BAM and that is what I use. If it offends you, maybe you need to go to another forum so you won't get your panties all in a wad. Its a name, its not like someone is firing at you. Take you pack off and relax.

No Gunny, I don't get my panties in a wad over that term,"BAM". I just feel like it shows disrespect to another Marine. I don't feel like a "Broad Assed Marine", when I joined the term was never used around me. Our DI's said if we heard the term, it was "Beautiful American Marine". So be it, I like Women Marines, I'm one of the Few and the Proud. This topic is really getting old. Thanks for replying, I belong to other Marine Forums, but I like this one. Semper Fi Sheila Hays LadyM59.
TO the woman marine who has identity issues (strawberry...something)
You are an idiot....it is WM's like you who make the real "woman marines" (yah, I said it!), look bad. You really ought to get over yourself. We all served some of us better than others...and it has been my experience that those who want recognition or special accolades for just doing their job are usually the ones who didn’t do much.

I believe it was Patton who said:
"Watch what people are cynical about, and one can often discover what they lack.”
Think about it....
Former WOMAN MARINE and proud of it, sure beats the hell outta BAM!

PEOPLE, PEOPLE, PEOPLE!!
Enough already. I guess I'm from the older Corps (to me the Old Corps was WWII) when I was in the proper term was WM or Woman Marine. Just like it was Former Marine rather than X-Marine. Now it is just MARINE. Once a Marine, always a Marine, PERIOD. Sounds like we all need to take deep breath, drink a cold one, and relax. Just a suggestion you under stand.

Here's a blast from the past! (I know that my user id can really stir the pot in this forum!)...But, I gotta tell ya'all that I remember when the WMs (yep, I also said it) had a "W" in front of our SSN (replacing the service number/serial number) so that when Admin was looking at info for orders, they would know that this was a female and she was not to be billeted with males.... kinda was useful, ya know!
As for the young LCpl Strawberry...I must agree with our Sister Marines who have said that you would do well to remember those of us who have gone before you, and those before us, who made a reputation of good, dedicated and loyal Marines and it was due to those Women Marines who led us into the Marine Corps (and they really did have it worse than you can imagine) that gives you the opportunity to speak in such a manner... you are quite welcome!
Now, I am posting for the first time in this forum, and am seeing that some of the issues that were there during my own 16 years in the Corps are still there...probably because there are still HUMAN beings in OUR beloved Corps!
Semper Fi to All our Brothers and Sisters in Our Corps!
What the **** a Marine wants political correctness. I've met good WM's and bad ones. We had one for instance that would **** any guy with a ring on his finger, but she got investigated for some sketchy paperwork and thats what she got the boot for. But we have good ones to stop carrying such a dam chip on your shoulder this is the Corps we **** with each other all the time.

OOHRAH!~ I too, believe that the politically correct crap has gone way too far... I mean think about it... cannot call us WMs but can call us Female Marines.... odd, I thought a Woman IS a Female...or, wait, maybe refering to one who is of the oposite gender of the Male is considered a no-no...WTH!
Anyway... I hear ya on the ribbin' and all that..we had a word for that way back in the Old Corps... it was called COMRADERY (spelling it wrong I think!)...duh...
We have some fine Marines out there representing our Corps these days, and one of them is one of my babies...er SON! But, I have met a few that are just plain weanies and whiners to boot... some of them are just pansies and it does not discriminate by gender either!
Semper Fi! Oh yeah... and SEMPER GUMBY!!!!
(While many of us are "stuck" in the "Old Corps" it appears that many of the youngsters are "stuck" in the "poor me" stage... this will come with age and experience)...that is what makes a Marine SALTY!
