View Full Version : Breathing Methods

When I run I can run an alright time. It's not that I'm bad at running, but every time I do run it seems like I can never control my breathing. I've tried to work on it, but I can never find a method that works. Someone asked if I had asthma at one point, but as far as I know I don't (and I don't think that would've been missed at the physical for the DEP program). Does anybody know of any methods that could help me before I go to boot camp?
In through the nose, out through the mouth.

SING! I swear! That's what you'll do in formation runs anyway - you'll sing cadence. Get a cadence CD to play in your player or download some to Ipod if you have one. They used to tell us to breathe in through our nose and out through our mouth.

My recruiter told me the whole reason for singing cadence on runs is because of how much it helps you breath. Singing expands your lungs a lot.

Does anyone else's lower rib area of the abdomin ever ache the day after you do a run? Not in a really painful way, but like your arms do after you've lifted weights or done push ups?

Mine has....Someone once told me that was because I wasn't hydrated enough. But Im not sure if that's right, so don't quote me on that one....lol

You are not hydrated enough.. and you are not breathing.. BREATH PEOPLE BREATH...
When it starts to hurt, take your left hand and put under your left rib( go further underneath) and push in and up BREATH IN A LOT OF AIR and let it out... it will help.

i do swiming to help with the breathing cause you learn quicker how to controol it or you swallow alot of water, and when u run try to do it with your chest out and up like in the movies it helps me when im running sprints but its like that or just being calm helps alot if im madd then dang you can tell cause i'll hold my breath sometimes or not inhale it all the way..just play wit your running try different breathing ways thats how i learned

also, don't focus on it. I actually find that I breathe better (as well as running a more consistent time) if my mind is on other things - my body just seems to go on autopilot. I don't know, maybe that's just me and my ****ed up system!
Also, something I forgot - if you find you cant seem to take in much air, remember that the exhale is as important as the inhale. If you don't exhale all the way (ideally hard and fast through the mouth), there is no room in your lungs for fresh oxygen. A great way to practice this is while swimming front crawl (freestyle) where you only have a split second to draw in breath, making it necessary to blow air out while your face is submerged.
Did that make sense?

kk this is what i do when i run they say breathe thru your nose but that **** never worked foe me.. i just take a deep breath and exhale a deep breath and exhale twice one on the left and the other on the right so i get a good bereathing techinique..
now the reason your longs hurt is because you are acutally using your lungs. In other words you are taking in more air and expanding your lower lungs which arent generally used to it for the people who dont do much cardio..
Now least thats what i was told and sounds damn dgood to me and it goes away anyways if you keep up runnign so figured it was the truth...

Another thing that seems to happen is when I run at first I'm fine, then I'll have a stage where it hurts, and then everything goes numb, but if I run for too much longer after I go numb it starts to hurt agian. Is this a good sign? Meaning am I building up my muscles or is that bad? Don't the Marines teach you to run through the pain anyways? Forgive me if that's wrong...

If you want mp3s you can try

There are three of those volumes that you can purchase. I don't really like using things like limewire because it always tends to download stuff illegally.

I know i am not a Marine YET. With 4 years of conditioning myself before the Wrestling season, is simply to run/sprint/work till you feel like you cant breath at all. The more you do that, and do it overand over through out a few weeks, your wind will build up and your lungs expand more. and yes the in through your nose out through your mouth is also great
