Participants in the second annual Run for the Warriors will be sporting a brand new design on their T-shirts this year.

Hope For The Warriors is an organization that helps wounded warriors feel there is hope for them beyond their injuries. And the creative minds of Onslow County students captured that message.

Local fourth- through 12th-graders were asked to submit designs that represented “Hope Beyond Recovery,” which is the theme of this year’s contest and the race.

The winning entry was selected by Marines currently living at the Wounded Warrior Barracks.

The artwork of Dixon ninth-grader Madison Cullman and Jacksonville Commons fourthgrader Emily Pryor were combined in the new design for this year’s Run for the Warriors t-shirts.

Madison’s design featured a combination of a marathon runner and an eagle crossing the finish line, while Emily’s design was the American flag in the shape of a giant star.

“We wanted (the Wounded Warriors) to capture the essence of hope beyond recovery,” said Amy Kourk, marketing director for Hope for the Warriors. “They liked both of the designs so much that they wanted to combine them.”

Both Madison and Emily’s families participated in Run for the Warriors last year and are taking part again this year.

The T-shirts with the new design also will be shipped to Iraq for the first Run for the Warriors in Iraq.

Members of 2nd Marine Logistics Group will take part in the 10K and 5K runs.

“The injuries and adversities of war are not a roadblock to life and what they can accomplish,” Kourk said.

“A lot of the kids have fathers who are deployed or injured and we want to bring awareness that it doesn’t always have to be negative.”

Registration is now open for the Run for the Warriors. More than 4,000 people are expected to participate in the second annual event on May 19 at Camp Lejeune. All proceeds from the race benefit Wounded Warriors and their families through Hope For The Warriors programs.

An 8 a.m. opening ceremony pays tribute to wounded warriors and their families and serves as the unit welcome home that most wounded service members never receive.

A 10K run, 5K run/walk and a 1 mile run/walk will follow the ceremony. An awards ceremony, expected to take place around 10:30 a.m., will immediately follow the races to close the event.
