JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — A refurbished Navy transport airplane flying to a weekend air show at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., crashed near the air station May 3, injuring all five civilians onboard.

Four of the passengers walked away with minor injuries, but the fifth is in critical condition, according to local media reports.

The Grumman US-2B Tracker, which was slated to be one of many aircraft on static display, crashed around 2 p.m. in a wooded area three miles south of the air station, according to a press release. No one on the ground was injured and no homes were damaged.

The crash comes on the heels of another that claimed the life of a pilot with the Navy Blue Angels near MCAS Beaufort, S.C. The elite team was performing its final maneuver at the end of an April 21 air show when one of the six planes peeled away from the others.

Lt. Cmdr. Kevin Davis, 32, was killed when his F/A-18 crashed into a residential area, injuring eight people on the ground and damaging homes.

Both crashes are under investigation.

The Cherry Point air show will continue as planned, Friday through Sunday.
