Flags lowered for two Code Talkers

Thursday, May 3, 2007 9:49 PM PDT

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (AP) - Navajo President Joe Shirley Jr. has ordered all flags flown at half-staff across the sprawling reservation for six days in honor of two Navajo Code Talkers who died in the past few days.

‘‘Pray for their families,'' Shirley said Wednesday during his weekly radio address. ‘‘They used our language against the Japanese, and the United States was able to win World War II with that assistance.''

The Code Talkers were an elite group of Navajo Marines who confounded the Japanese during the war by transmitting messages in their native language.

Stewart Clah, 87, of Tse' Daa' Kaan, N.M., died Sunday and Charles K. Guy Sr. of Chinle, Ariz., died Tuesday.

Shirley said the Navajo Nation is saddened by the loss of the two Code Talkers.

He said they both served the United States and the tribe with courage, honor and distinction.

Shirley's proclamation calls for all flags to be flown at half-staff through Sunday.
