Here's the scoop as it stands now:
This was at the 2/9 website:
"My name is 1st Sgt Mike Daley and I am the SgtMaj of the Anti Terrorism Battalion of the 2nd Marine Division. My message to all of you is this: If you know of anyone who served in the infantry battalion of 2/9, the Anti Terrorism Battalion will be de activated on the 13th of July 2007 and 2/9 will be reactivated in the very same ceremony. We are encouraging everyone who served in 2/9's rich history to attend. Please spread the word. Will be at 1000 at the WPT parade field on Holcomb Blvd. Best regards to all, Semper Fi....1st Sgt Mike Daley"

My guess is that someone at HQMC realized a certain lack of manliness in the Corps these days and realized that de-activation of the 9th was the cause.
