SAN DIEGO -- Police in San Diego are looking for potential identity-theft victims of a former Marine who they said had preyed on young sailors and Marines.

According to officials, Aton Aguon, 26, told military members he was a Marine staff sergeant working as a recruiter. Aguon allegedly got them hotel rooms he paid for with stolen credit cards and eventually drained their bank accounts and stole their identities as well.

Investigators believe that 50 such incidents occurred in the last few months.

Aguon also is accused by police of preying on an elderly Oceanside woman while dressed in a Marine uniform. Authorities said he told the woman his wife was killed in Iraq and that they had a terminally ill daughter. The woman extended her sympathies to Aguon and invited him into her home. While he was there, police said, he stole her Social Security number.

Aguon, who left the Marines in 2004, is being held at the San Diego Central Jail and faces two counts of vehicle theft, credit card fraud and obtaining money under false pretenses. He is being held on $75,000 bail.

Anybody who suspects they may have been a victim of Aguon is being urged to call 619-692-4800.
