U.S. troops dismantle mines found near U.S. base in Afghanistan

Associated Press

BAGRAM, Afghanistan — U.S. troops dismantled mines containing 32 pounds of explosives that had been planted under the seat of a motorcycle near an American base in eastern Afghanistan, a military spokeswoman said Wednesday.
Residents of the town of Khost found the mines and notified U.S. troops nearby at Chapman Air Base, U.S. spokeswoman Capt. Alayne Cramer told reporters at Bagram.

“The device, made from two anti-tank mines, was designed to detonate by radio. The device was dismantled and there were no injuries,” Cramer said.

It was unclear who planted the mines and no other details were available.

Between 500 and 1,000 U.S. troops are based in Khost province to hunt down al-Qaida and Taliban fugitives believed to be operating in the area.
