SkilletsUSMC, it is not much different then the 40's early 50's of America.
China is about to bloom as America did back then. They are on the grow, we are on the wane.

I dunno.....I can certainly see some minor comparison between "us" then and them now. But not quite 100 percent. Maybe 30 or so.

They are not the powerhouse most believe they are going to be, in my opinion. Yes, they have a large population, etc etc, but it's also an aging population.

If anything, they will have a bright flash for several months, or perhaps, years, and then they will recess back to 2nd or 3d world status.

I was in the PRC, Beijing the capital of China last year and that place is booming. Sure they have major pollution problems (coal) but Mercedes, BMW's and Lexus's are everywhere. No American cars, mostly German and Japanese.

I was taken back how big and many the banks were, probably because all the American money they have in them. Wealth and poverty are all over the place. I gave a women with a baby on her back a buck that was panhandling and she acted like I gave her a thousand dollars.

I could buy American Military clothing items brand new with D.O.D. tags in the kiosks in shopping centers. Just in case you wanted to know where your military clothing is made. LOL Marine Corps covers, all types and if you wanted to be an officer they had American General Stars too !

What soldiers I saw were young gangly kids with uniforms that looked a little to big. Tienanmen Square the soldiers in front and across from the Forbidden City on sentry duty by the Chinese flag looked sharp.

I was hoping to get a picture (goofing around) with two Chinese Soldiers and me, like if I was in their custody. My 40 year old University Graduate, perfect Japanese speaking guide was afraid for me even to take pictures close up of soldiers. I think he was more afraid of them than I was.

When we landed in Beijing I couldn't see the tarmac the pollution was so bad until we touched down.

There are huge beautiful restaurants everywhere but the food sucks. Beer is free but bottled water cost a buck and a half. I don't drink, screwed again.

One restaurant we had these beautiful Chinese teenage waitresses, this real cutie was helping me with the huge glass lazy Susan retrieving food. She refused a five dollar tip, saying, "not permitted!" My wife got so jealous and mad at us two I thought she was going to walk home to Chicago. LOL

The girls are absolutely beautiful in China http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/tsmileys2/07.gif

MacDonald's Big Mac's were a little gritty.

They had only one concession in the Forbidden City, a Starbucks

I think I was the only Yankee there (Japanese tour group) everybody else (many) had a cockney accent or German and French.

Bring your gas mask, the air is foul with pollution.

I'm not in a hurry to go back.

Dont get me wrong. I dont HATE China, but with as many people they have there life becomes pretty cheap. The pictures do a good job saying it on thier own.

From what I understand there are exceptions to that rule if you live in the countryside. And even then the enforcement of the laws is about as half assed as everything else in a communist nation.

well its not a pure communistic country just like we are not a pure democratic country... They have done a lot of tweaking to the system while the govt remains in direct control people are now able to own their own land... After seeing how much wealth was generated in hong kong and after its turn over back to china they have started adopting a lot of capitalistic ideas and importing them from hong kong to mainland china. But im not a big fan on law enforcement in general and what I mean is laws arent too bad but most enforcers have one of those beat up by their sisters and picked on and have a passive aggressive whiny ***** mentality to them.. Others are the gung ho type but i have foudn the former describes most.

Now that is is an interesting viewpoint on the population age!
In the 40's/50's America was producing kids (the baby boomers) like rabbits! We had a young workforce to keep the growth of production in motion for years. China however, has stayed the course for low (very low, females to be aborted) reproduction.
I think that you may very well be right that this will cause them to be a flash in the pan. Interesting view!

Thanks...and that's the great thing about here!

Who knows, tho, I could easily be wrong. But, if you look at demographics world wide, lots of the "old Europe" countries (Italy, Greece, France, etc) birthrates are either declining, remaining static, or dropped below the charts. The social welfare systems these places have instituted are going to collapse under their own weight, because, quite simply, there aren't enough kids being born to eventually support the old farts (who are living longer with assured pensions and benefits) who have 'got theirs' and retired.

The Russian birthrate has actually DECLINED to the point where, in 10 years or so, the country will be almost devoid in sections, of 'young people'.

The one demographic group that continues to grow?

Those of the Muslim faith. Their birthrates continue to INcrease. Worldwide.

Oh, and the only country that continues to have an increasing or 'above average' birthrate in Europe? Ireland.

Gotta love the Irish. LOL.

Sgt Lep,

On the wifes NHK Japanese TV station (dish) they are always talking about the Japanese declining birth rate and who's going to pay for their aging population. There is a high double digit percentage of Japanese girls who are in their forties that have never married or intend too. The big thing in Japan now is young ladies having very little dogs they carry can around in their purse.

Is there a decline in the Christian NA/SA Hispanic population ? I don't think so judging by Chicago. Maybe they'll be the Crusaders who save the West ?

Brazil has made social security cuts and still has more to make, is this the future ?

Argentinians are repatriating to Spain, maybe moving to France won't be a metaphor for teasing lefties pretty soon, maybe people will actually be wanting to go.

My 13 year old granddaughter is studying French instead of Spanish, maybe she knows something...

No, the Christian NA/SA hispanic population is running constant, or increasing.

It's the wave of the future.
