Those Who Serve
124th Marines Returning; 180th Leaving

(Toledo, OH) --- Marines from 1st Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Maine Division will be returning Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., following a six-month deployment in Iraq, officals announced Friday.

The Marines were activated on June 1, 2006, and served in Iraq after a four-month pre-deployment training in California. The local unit was in Iraq in October --- one of the heaviest months for U.S. casualties in the war on terror.

"The marines will arrive by bus at 7:30 p.m., get off the bus, and will be dismissed to their families after a brief welcome back ceremony, said Lt. Col. Joseph Reimer. "There will be some babies meeting their fathers for the first time."

While the 124th Marines are returning, another local unit will be heading to Iraq.

Some 330 members of the 180th Fighter Wing of the Ohio Air National Guard will be heading to Iraq for a six-week deployment.. They are scheduled to leave from Toledo Express Airport around 3:45 p.m. Saturday.

A send-off ceremony, including a speech by U.S. Congressman, Paul Gillmor, will be held at the 180th Fighter Wing's base at Toledo Express Airport.

NBC24 will have complete coverage of both events on NBC24 Saturday at 6, 7, and 11 p.m.
