NBC question

Hi I'm new to this site, and I was wondering if you could all give me some insight, I just recently enlisted in to the marine corps and im leaving in August of this year I took NBC as my MOS I was wondering if someone could tell me something about this MOS, and any suggestions as to whether or not I should change it, I'm looking for somethign with alot of action. thanks

NBC as an MOS huh? I wouldn't have, but alright. I went to boot camp with one fellow Marine that was NBC, he was placed in that MOS didn't get there by choice. It doesn't seem too bad, but I wouldn't know. Give it a try, see how you like it.

ahhh NBC (No Body Cares). when i was a 5711 (NBC Specialist) thats what we said it stood for. at that time there was not much imfasis (sp) on it.

NBC means Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Warfare. i was fortunate and worked both sides as an instructor at the FMFLant NBC School and as a Marine Wing Weapons Unit Specialist (hands on nuks and chems)

i did find it is an MOS that requires a lot of math skills though.

Well I was kind of hoping to do something hands on with nukes and chemicals. How hard is it to get into being a Wing Weapons Unit Specialist? Thats what I was more hoping to do somehitng like that thanks again.

nah it sounds cool but its basically you detect chemcal's but usually you passing out gas masks takign care of them the mop suits you give classes on what to do if exposed sometimes do training how to decon everything including a ****ter seat...

You're gonna be running the gas chamber and teaching pouges about the gas mask. You're not gonna be anywhere near a nuke. Everyone I knew in NBC, hated it. Hated the MOS school, and hated the job. You do have to be a smart son-of-a-gun to make it through MOS school though. They have a super high wash-out rate. If you fail, they're gonna retrain you to be a heavy equipment operator or motor transport, since both of those schools are at Ft. Leonardwood as well. I'd talk to my recruiter about making a switch. If he tells you no, then I'd tell him you're finished with him. Don't let him stiff you with a job you don't want. Thats just me though.

to work as MWWU specialist must be either NBC or Aviation Ordnance pay grade E-5 or above. the Corps also has NOP )Nuclear Ordnance Platoons).
must have secret (final) clearance and be in the PRP (Personnel Reliability Program).

As a 5711 i can tell you to look over your options again. It is an incredibly difficult school to graduate from. It's attrition rate is close to and similiar to Spec Ops attrition rates for the simple fact that academically, its hard as hell. To date i believe they are sending the "wash-outs" to become food service specialists, no longer Motor T ops and engineers. They send them to the east coast to cook. Some of the things in school that are especially difficult are the tests. You must have an 80% to pass the tests, and if you fail three, your dropped to MATT Plt. until the next cycle, fail three in the next training platoon, you become a cook. Math skills are essential which is something i dont have, i had a real hard time with the plotting and stuff. Once you hit the fleet, you are going to have to teach other Marines what you learned, and they expect you, andyou should be the resident duty expert. However, it isn't really used very much in theatre. SO...if you want the challenge of passing one of the hardest schools the Marine Corps has to offer, have at it. It's not a skate school...but just know, you will rarely do your MOS in the fleet, and end up becoming accustomed to being a Training Clerk, and an ATFP clerk. So, its up to what you want. Any other questions about the actual MOS...just ask.

LOL now cooks it sound slike a ****ty job but if you get that try overseas so you get people who are fapd to the chow hall.. In iwakuni i went to mess duty and the cooks walked around bossing people around they didnt do ****....

with all due respect Sergeant, that isn't exactly true. i was an NBC school Marine at ft leonard woods for 6 and a half months. i went through the class twice, and washed out twice. i was re-classed to 0621 Field Radio Operator and am MUCH, MUCH happier doing what i do now.

i will say that you are very much correct about not liking the school. you want action? this is about as close to the action as your mother's kitchen.

also, the academic rules are as follows: FIVE test failures (not three) will get you dropped to MATT to wait another few months for another platoon class to begin. OR, you can "double non-master" a test which is an automatic drop to MATT platoon. if you wash out twice, you are typically re-classed to another MOS not of your choice.

No, they aren't necessarily going to send you to bull sh*t job. if you are a sh*tbag Marine who doesn't give two sh*ts, then yeah, standby for something you don't want. i personally was left positive remarks by my instructors and re-classed to a pretty cool job. apparently things have changed a bit since gangwaydevildog was in school... but the drop-out rate depends entirely on your instructors, as i will show you below. i failed because i could not motivate myself to pay attention in class... the material is very, VERY dry. you want actual stats, here they are.

guess who that one failure was... yes, embarassing but I am too proud of what we do to stand here and be ashamed of rocking out of one of the hardest schools in the Corps.

Being a field radio operator is one of the best jobs in the Corps. If you want my opinion (and I am sure you don't) you ended up better off- even though it had to stink getting dropped and sent to 29 Palms for FROC.
