JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit landed in Kuwait on Sunday for two weeks of training.

Marines, sailors and their equipment were offloaded from the ships of the Bataan Expeditionary Strike Group to begin sustainment training at the Udairi Range complex, according to a MEU press release.

Col. Gregg Sturdevant, commanding officer of the MEU, said every element of the Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based unit will get the chance to train.

“The Kuwait sustainment training allows the entire MEU air ground logistics team to come ashore for the first time since departing the United States in early January,” he said in a statement. “We will maximize the training and maintenance opportunities the Udairi Range complex and Camp Buehring have to offer.”

After the training, the MEU will return to the ships and continue operations in the region as the strategic reserve force.

Since the MEU sailed from North Carolina on Jan. 6 and arrived in U.S. Central Command’s area of responsibility, it has completed three bilateral training exercises with military forces in the Horn of Africa and the Persian Gulf region.

The MEU deployed with the Corps’ first Marine special operations company. That company entered Afghanistan in February and was later expelled after members allegedly fired on civilians after a convoy ambush March 4. The company rejoined the MEU at the time, but officials have not commented on whether the company is still with the unit.
