Have any of you Marines looked at the New LPD's, the San Antonio Class ships the Navy is getting now? One is the USS NEW YORK, her keel was made from scrape steel from the WTC! Google USS NEW YORK and check it out, seems like the Corps has got a new ride, Marines! I'd like to see one of them! images/smilies/thumbup.gif

I am beginning to think everyone has seen this new ship! I just wanted to see what you Marines thought about it.

If I were aboard that ship (one of the 700 Marines) I would have a personal stake against the terrorists we would go to kill.

I lost some buddies in the WTC that day. Can't wait until it is commisioned. Lotta beer to guzzle:beer:

Artists Rendering of the USS New York

With a year to go before it even touches the water, the Navy's amphibious assault ship USS New York has already made history. It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center.

USS New York is about 45 percent complete and should be ready for launch in mid-2007 . Katrina disrupted construction when it pounded the Gulf Coast last summer, but the 684-foot vessel escaped serious damage, and workers were back at the yard near New Orleans two weeks after the storm.

It is the fifth in a new class of warship designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

"It would be fitting if the first mission this ship would go on is to make sure that bin Laden is taken out, his terrorist organization is taken out," said Glenn Clement, a paint foreman. "He came in through the back door and knocked our towers down and (the New York) is coming right through the front door, and we want them to know that."

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, La., to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept. 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a spiritual moment for everybody there."

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up."

"It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."

The ship's motto? - 'Never Forget'

I used to work at the top of the WTC (Tower 2) the one without the antenna (110the floor).

Lotta Marines on that ship (700). I hope that there is some space. That many Marines in a tight spot means a lot of 'friction':usmc: :D .

The smallest ship I was on was the Shreveport with the 2nd Fleet. I couldn't even roll over. And those 'boots' who had no 'sea legs' just made things worse.

I was ****ed when the Brits beat the Argentinians before we could help them.

Hopefully, they'll have the worst of the bugs worked out of the USS San Antonio before the USS New York hits the fleet.

I can't remember where I read it today, but evidently the San Antonio is having all sorts of problems. It was recently forced to unexpectedly put into Pensacola for steering gear repairs.

Other problems include wobbly ladderways, electronics and computer problems, the crew forced to jury rig the shore power hookups when docked, and other things.

That wasn't the same article I read, but it mentions most of the problems.

Those gears are going to be a real mutha'f to contend with if they need changing out. A Submariner buddy said that those huge gears are so precise that the diagnostic computer can detect a piece of scotch tape on one of the teeth! :nerd:
