Pentagon approves funding for F-35 jet
WASHINGTON
The Pentagon on Thursday signed off on initial production of the Joint Strike Fighter, a single-engine military fighter jet, after a senior advisory panel approved the terms of the deal.
The Bethesda, Md.-based defense contractor is expected to deliver the F-35s to the Marines, Air Force and Navy. It is one of the largest defense spending programs ever with an expected cost of $276 billion.
"We're pleased with today's decision for the first full funding of the F-35 production aircraft," said Tom Jurkowsky, a spokesman for Lockheed. "This decision signals the true beginning of more than 30 years of production."
