MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif.(February 27, 2003) -- With the onset of war looming and uncertainty reigning, community-based establishments are feeling compelled to support deployed troops and help out in any way they can.

For Trader Joe's in Temecula, donating approximately 500 pounds of meat through Marine Corps Community Services to the Food Ministry program at the South Mesa Chapel here Feb. 13 was one way to give back to deployed troops and their families for serving their country.

"I think it's wonderful when any organization out in town thinks to help out our service members," said Hugh L. Cooper, deputy director at MCCS here.

"We (employees at Trader Joe's) wanted to have a barbecue for troops who were going to deploy, but they left sooner than we expected," said Brian Schulte, Trader Joe's assistant manager. "Since we couldn't, we donated the meat. We wish them the best."

The meat donation consisted of about 300 pounds of ham and 200 pounds of prime rib, Schulte said.

"The meat was given out last Wednesday to about 45 military families and to the Assault Amphibian School battalion," said Navy Lt. Cmdr. Willie S. Williams, chaplain for the 21 Area. "We try to give out foods and other products to families that are hurting with four or five kids."

According to Petty Officer 2nd Class Juliet A. Johnson, religious program specialist at the South Mesa Chapel, the Food Ministry program currently consists of about 15 volunteers that take part in handing out food products to over 150 families every Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

"Over the last 37 weeks the program has given out 185,000 pounds with a sum of $198,569 in food products," Williams said. "The program has also given out $7,000 in diapers and handed out new coats."

All personnel aboard Camp Pendleton are welcome to take advantage of the canned foods, breads and other products the program is giving out, Johnson added.
