Lance Cpl. Daniel R. Scherry, 20, who was assigned to Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines, died Monday from “a non-hostile accident” in Iraq’s Anbar province, the Defense Department announced Tuesday. It was the region’s second death resulting from a non-hostile incident in less than a week.
Scherry, of Rocky River, Ohio, enlisted last April and was a mortarman who joined the battalion in September, according to a II Marine Expeditionary Force release.
The Defense Department on Monday announced another Marine, Lance Cpl. Daniel J. Santee, 21, had died on Saturday in a separate non-hostile vehicle accident. Santee was assigned to the Lejeune-based 2nd Marine Logistics Group.
A II MEF spokesman declined to say whether the two incidents were related.
