Korean War veterans to be honored at 50th anniversary of cease-fire

Times staff

Korean War veterans will be the center of attention for three days this July in Washington, D.C., to mark the 50th anniversary of the conflict’s cease-fire and the end of three years of Defense Department commemorations.
The veterans, their families and the public are invited to the “National Salute to Korean War Veterans” in Washington July 25-27. It will include an event at the MCI Center, a ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery and a ceremony at the Korean War Veterans Memorial on the National Mall.

Military and nationally known entertainers will perform at the MCI Center. The final list was still being worked out at press time.

Events will include a parade of unit colors from all five branches of the U.S. military and the 21 other nations that fought under U.N. command in the 1950-53 war. It will be the first time the colors of all major units from the Korean War have been brought together.

The events are sponsored by the Department of Defense 50th Anniversary of the Korean War Commemoration Committee, which has sponsored more than 100 events nationwide to honor Korean War veterans and family members since June 25, 2000, the 50th anniversary of the day North Korean forces invaded South Korea.
