Some brands of olives have been pulled from commissary shelves worldwide because they could be contaminated with life-threatening botulism, commissary officials announced late Friday afternoon.

Officials are asking customers to check olives they may have bought to make sure they are not in the affected batches. They are warning customers not to eat the product, even it does not look or smell spoiled.

The olives are potentially contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can cause life-threatening illness or death, officials said in the announcement.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, the company, Charlie Brown di Rutigliano & Figli S.r.l., in Bari, Italy, voluntarily recalled the Cerignola Olives, Nocellara Olives and Castelvetrano Olives after routine testing found that they had been underprocessed.

The recall applies to olives containing codes beginning with the letter “G” followed by three or four digits under the following brands:

* Borrelli

* Bonta di Puglia

* Cento

* Corrado’s

* Dal Raccolto

* Flora

* Roland

* Vantia

The recall covers all sizes of cans, glass jars and pouches of the olives.

Botulism can cause general weakness, dizziness, double vision, and difficulty speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be symptoms. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention, officials said.

As of Friday, there had been no reports of illnesses.

Commissary customers who have these olives should return the items to the store where they purchased them for a full refund.
