Local Boy Scouts send packages to Iraq

NEWARK -- The U.S. Marines have a reputation for looking out for their own, but then so do Boy Scouts, as evidenced by a local troop's actions on Friday.

Troop 11 sent 10 boxes filled with everything from candy to playing cards to their assistant scoutmaster and his unit, who are serving in Iraq.

"I thought it would be nice to have something from everyone to show we're still thinking of him," said Brandon Miller, 15.
Miller, of Newark, said he and fellow scouts came up with the idea to send care package to U.S. Army Spc. Matthew Pierce and his unit. Pierce, who has been stationed in Iraq for eight months, has been with the troop since he was a scout, said Richard Blount, an assistant scoutmaster.

Scoutmaster Bill Rissler said the experience teaches the scouts about the importance of patriotism and helping others. "It teaches them about caring about the person as an individual," he said.
