The U.S.S. New Orleans docked at Allegheny Pier at Pensacola Naval Air Station this morning. The 684-foot-long ship arrived from Panama City and will be at the air station for the next three or four days for routine maintenance.

The U.S.S. New Orleans is one of the newest San Antonio class amphibious transports. It will be used for tasks such as transporting and landing Marines, equipment and supplies as well as landing aircraft in expeditionary warfare missions.

The ship was commissioned March 20 and has 28 officers and 322 crew members. When embarked, it holds about 700 Marines plus equipment, said Harry White, public relations officer at the air station.

The San Antonio class ships are the first amphibious ships designed to accommodate the Marine Corps’ "mobility triad" - Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicles, Landing Craft Air Cushion and the Marine Corps’ new tilt-rotor MV-22 Osprey - for high-speed, long-range tactical-lift operations.

The ship will not be open to the public for tours.
