Air Force fighter loses canopy, lands safely in Nevada

By: Associated Press

LAS VEGAS -- A military F-15C Eagle fighter jet lost its cockpit canopy during a test mission in southern Nevada, but returned safely to Nellis Air Force Base, officials said.

The mishap occurred about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Nevada Test and Training Range after the aircraft took off about 10:18 a.m., base spokesman Capt. Justin McVay said. The pilot returned the aircraft to the base and landed safely at 10:39 a.m.

Both the aircraft and the pilot, whose name was not released, are assigned to the 85th Test and Evaluation Squadron from Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.

Nellis personnel were searching for the canopy in an area near Caliente, northeast of Nellis. F-15C Eagles cruise at 570 mph, according to the manufacturer.

A statement from the base said a board of officers will investigate the cause of the incident.

Nellis, about 10 miles north of Las Vegas, has air warfare, weapons, ground operations and threat training schools, and is home to the Air Force Thunderbirds aerial demonstration team.
