A high-ranking Marine will donate his kidney to a 10-year-old Hardeeville girl with a life-threatening disease.
After two months of testing and several failed matches, the local Marine was cleared Wednesday and had committed his kidney to save the life of Shawna Crawford.
Shawna, who's been in and out of hospitals since collapsing from kidney failure last summer, was rushed to Medical University of South Carolina on Sunday. Her lungs were filling with fluid.
On the way to the Charleston hospital she pleaded with her mother to make the pain go away.
"'Please God, stop this. I can't take it anymore,'" Shawna told her mother, Lorna Crawford. "She was literally gasping for every breath she could get."
