Aikahi holding Military Appreciation Day

Students at Aikahi Elementary School in Kailua are holding a military appreciation and awareness day today.

More than 500 students will tie yellow ribbons on the school fence to show support for the troops and a color guard from the 1st Battalion 12th Marines will lead the student body in the pledge of allegiance and the national anthem during a special school assembly.

Gunnery Sergeant Louis Simmons will be the guest speaker. Students with deployed family members will tie large personalized ribbons onto trees around campus. They will take the bows home at the end of the school year.

Some interesting facts released by the school:

Twenty six percent of Aikahi students have military ties.

All students with military ties will be given a double flag pin to wear for the day to raise military awareness.

Students and faculty are encouraged to wear red, white and blue on this day.

Approximately 8 Marines from 1st Battalion 12th Marines will part icipate.

The Marines of 1st Battalion 12th Marines will have lunch with the students and administration prior to this event.

Aikahi has approximately 90 students with ties to the military. Most come from Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

All of the military services have a presence at Aikahi Elementary. They have families from Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Hawaii National Guard and Reserve, and Air National Guard
