Students Help Out Some Local Marines

Camillus (WSYR-TV) -- Some students from Camillus were given a chance to meet their hero Monday night. Lance Corporal Jeff Cleland was stationed overseas for about 7 months.

Since September, several sixth graders collected cell phones for Jeff and his friends in Iraq.

“So we could turn them in for calling cars and we collected soap and shampoo and towels,” said Ken Brill, one of the students.

In a few short months, they raised more than $550!

“To be able to call our families and not having to worry about buying them, paying out of our pockets, it means a lot to us,” said Jeff Cleland.

It means even more for Ryan Fitzpatrick, “I hope that he thinks that he knows that we care and that we will always be happy to help out troops,” Fitzpatrick said.

For a little more than a half an hour, they asked Jeff about his journey and how tricky the weather can be in Iraq.

“Especially going from 135 to 20 degrees, it’s kind of a swing in temperature there,” Cleland said.

It’s fascinating, especially when you’ve never experienced it first hand.

“People in Iraq really don’t have much, and the marines need a lot out there, and we can help them by collecting things and sending and that it really made a big impact on them,” said Maggie Dunn.

If you would like to help out, you can drop off your used cell phones at St. Joseph’s Church in Camillus.
