Top general in Afghanistan expels Marines

by Rowan Scarborough, The Examiner
(found at www.drudgereport.com)
WASHINGTON (Map, News) - The top American general in Afghanistan has expelled a U.S. Marine special operations company for the way the men responded to an ambush March 4, Marine sources said.

Maj. Cliff Gilmore, a spokesman for Marine Special Operations Command, confirmed to The Examiner that the company of 120 Marines is redeploying.

He said the decision followed an ambush on the company's convoy by a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device. A second Marine source said the Marines retaliated and some civilians were killed.

The action brought an abrupt end to what promised to be a historic deployment. The unit sailed in January from Camp Lejeune, N.C., as the first Marine Corps special operations company sent overseas. The Corps joined U.S. Special Operations Command a year ago.

The company is now redeploying to Kuwait after just a few weeks in Afghanistan in what was supposed to be a six-month tour.

A Marine officer assigned to special operations said Lt. Gen. Karl Eikenberry, the top U.S. commander, took the extraordinary step of expelling the unit after he consulted with Afghan Prime Minister Hamid Karzai.

A spokesman for Eikenberry could not be reached today.

Gilmore said, "The unit responded to the ambush and the local population perceptions of that response have damaged the relationship between the local population and the Marine special operations company."

HUMMM I'll have to ponder on this a bit, were they to aggressive for this Army General??? Maybe they performed as True Marine Warriors and it scared the army??? They killed civilians, I assume no women nor children or else that would have been overstated by the press, males in civies, civilians or attackers????
A lot of information is missing to understand what really happened......

If we are trying to win "Hearts and Minds" maybe the Army General should of asked for the "Peace Corps" instead ?

I think it has to do with the fact that Marines are mostly Polite, professional and have a plan to kill everyone they meet. Its the part that 'mostly' doesnt cover than scares the crap out of them.

I have a new plan for "redeployment".
KILL EVERYONE IN FU(KING SIGHT!
This will scare the army types and the Marine Corps will be given a "time out" http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/mad/mad0025.gifin a different country! The Corps will have done the job they are trained for and then shipped out to let the army (or the peace corps) play target and hadji with the natives. It's time to decide if we are playing for keeps or just killing time (and good Marines{and even soldiers}). Getting real tired of the BS from the top!

I forgot to add that an Army general would probably equal a Marine Gunnery Sergeant (I hope that is not an insult to the Gunnery Sergeant)!!!!!!

I agree Sarg; it's time to pull the pin on these towel heads. No more calling the boss to see if it's OK to shoot. Either let the troops do what they are there for or get the hell out...

The General probably wanted to wait for a Battalion or two of reinforcement and a gang of Press before counterattacting. That way they get a lot of coverage with very little chance of actually finding any enemy.
MF the General, God Bless the Marine Corps

SEMPER FI,

It is an insult! I worked for a living and didn't have aides and syncophants to take care of me!! That being said, the Army does produce some very good leaders, but like almost all of them at some level, they start being PC and worrying more about their career instead of doing what is right. Let the Marines do the job they are trained to do and they come in and police up the area using Army and Peace Corps.

This sux! The ambush caused no Marines casualties, but it had the effect of removing 120 Marines from the battlefield.

Now that sends the wrong message!

Just remember this quote whenever you hear of the latest army idiocy:

"Today, the senior leadership of the U.S. armed forces in general and, the U.S. Army in particular, is overly bureaucratic, risk averse, professionally inadequate and, hence, unsuited to the complex military tasks entrusted to them."
Col Douglas MacGregor, US Army retired
